Celebrating Differences, Embracing Strengths at Weber Therapy and Consulting

Neurodivergent affirming therapy at Weber Therapy and Consulting, in Geneva, IL

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is the natural variation in how human brains work, influencing how we think, learn, and interact with the world. It recognizes that autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive differences are not disorders to be fixed but rather unique ways of thinking, learning, and experiencing the world. Neurodiversity is a spectrum and includes a wide range of cognitive variations.

The term was coined in the late 1990s by sociologist Judy Singer and she advocated for recognizing neurological differences as part of human diversity. This represents a move away from viewing these differences, as deficits to be fixed.

By embracing neurodiversity, we foster value and celebration of diverse perspectives and strengths.

Benefits of Neuroaffirming Therapy

Neuroaffirming Therapy should focus on helping folks to recognize and appreciate their strengths, develop coping strategies, and achieve their identified goals. Traditional practices have often aimed to "correct" behaviors. A neuroaffirming therapist recognizes that neurodivergence is not a problem—it’s a different way of being. The approach is based on acceptance, empowerment, and advocacy, to help clients:

  • Develop self-confidence and self-advocacy skills

  • Reduce anxiety, overwhelm, and burnout

  • Navigate relationships and social expectations

  • Find strategies that work with, not against, their brain

Weber Therapy and Consulting embraces neurodiversity and offers tailored support to help teens, young adults and parents navigate their unique journeys. My approach is rooted in understanding, respect, and empowerment—because every mind deserves to thrive.
